4 Things to Consider when Shopping for Self Storage

By: John Moesier

Need self storage? You might just assume that all self storage units are created equal. After all, storage units are simply empty, locked rooms with space for your things. It has a door that opens, empty floorspace, a nice-sized lock, and maybe a weak, dangling light bulb. So, how complicated could shopping for self storage be? It might be a bit more than you think. If you want to find the best deal on the most appropriate self storage for your possessions, read on for the four main things to consider when shopping for storage.
Pricing. Price will always be the first thing you look at when renting self storage. However, you need to be sure to look at more than the storage companies advertised price. Youll want to look at the contract and paperwork carefully, as there are more hidden costs when renting self storage than you might think. Might you be expected to pay extra for any insurance, or to use trolleys and pallet trucks? Is there a deposit or one time fee involved? Look more deeply into the paperwork so youre aware of any hidden or back-end charges.
The Amount of Space. Another important consideration when youre shopping for self storage is the size of the unit. If you look at your possessions when theyre lying around your house, they might seem like theyd take up more space than they really do. Try not to overestimate the amount of space you need, as you dont want to pay for space that you dont use. But neither do you want to find yourself running out of storage space when youre only half unpacked. Estimate accurately. And remember that, with careful loading, more can fit into a self storage space than you expect.
The Level of Security. It goes to figure that, if you want to store something, you want to keep it. After all, theres really no point in using a self storage unit of your possessions arent safe there. Before deciding on a self storage company, check out their policies on fire prevention and security. Self storage companies all have different (and some not-so-secure) policies about fire and theft prevention.
Temperature and Humidity Control. The demand for self storage units with round-the-clock climate control is rising. And even though these types of units are more expensive, they might be the better option if youre storing valuable or delicate possessions. The molds, mildews, dust, and bacteria caused by uncontrolled heat and humidity can really harm delicate objects. So for those looking to store expensive furniture, electronics, etc., it may be a good idea to spend a little extra on a self storage unit with climate control.
